Just because your side lost decisively doesn’t mean that democracy is in danger. It means you backed losers in every sense of the word.

Netanyahu's coalition is reliant on the ultra-orthodox parties and the hard-right. The former are adamant that their kids will not serve. The latter have been busy fantasizing about pushing Palestinians out of Gaza (and then the West Bank… and then Israel proper), starting in the North of the Strip, and re-establishing settlements there. To this end, they don't seem to mind sacrificing their kids and ours in a never-ending war which becomes a de facto Occupation. Both groupings have said they'd leave and bring down the government if their demands aren't met.

Meanwhile Netanyahu's not just worried about possibly losing and election, he's scared that if he were to do so he might be found guilty on one or more of the charges of corruption and abuse of public office which have been filed against him. He's scared of going to prison, like his predecessor Ehud Olmert. He also quite likes the 2 million shekels ($550,000) of public money being spent on his household every year. That's the least his wife Sara deserves. She's probably the only thing which frightened him more than the prospect of prison.
