Gary -- while you were travelling, the man accused of bombing the Rue Copernic Synagogue was caught. We were part of a delegation of Jewish journalists who attended Friday night services at that synagogue just months later. I remember the saw horses that blocked entry to the streets, and the gendarmes at the door. We all commented on how fortunate we were to live in the US, where freedom to worship did not require an armed guard. How naive we were.
Elegant, heartfelt, and wise -- as your words always are. Todah rabbah. And safe travels.
Gary, thanks for your usual beautiful and sensitive writing. I finished reading feeling, "So sad."
